Telluride Mushroom Festival 2014

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm back from my trip. I first flew to Flagstaff, AZ to meet up with a friend and do some mushroom hunting there, mainly looking for Boletus barrowsii. We didn't find any and I was told about a sure fire spot to look, so if they were out, we should have found them. Oh well, we did find other things and lots of lobster mushrooms. Then we drove from Flagstaff to Telluride and camped there from Friday night through the following Wednesday night and then drove back to Flagstaff and I flew home to Sarasota, FL. Here is a photo documentation of my journey.

Flagstaff first.... Two new critters I'd never seen before. A Acorn Woodpecker and a Abert's squirrel with the tufted ears (not so tufted in the summer months apparently)

We found lots of these beautiful Russula's which unfortunately are NOT R. xerampelina but something else that are not edible. post-1-0-37263800-1408827704_thumb.jpg

Lobsters all over the place, fresh and no bugs: and a nice assortment of Agaricus, Shaggy manes, lobsters, etc. post-1-0-06446300-1408828031_thumb.jpg

There is a campground right in town that is first come first serve so you need to get there early to grab a site. We stayed up at Matterhorn Campground where there is a creek, hot showers and bathrooms etc. There are condo's you can rent and share and plenty of places to stay...I have no idea on prices. Nighttime temps around 45 and daytime highs around 70-75 which at that altitude is HOT!

One of these years, I should try to make that trip. The worst part of the drive would be here in NW North Dakota. The oil traffic here is nuts anyplace west of me.

I think you will find the trip totally worth it, dakotabob. Telluride is gorgeous and even though this was not one of the truly memorable mushroom harvest years, they usually are and you will bring lots of stuff home with you. Well worth the trip and a lot of fun had by all.
