foxfire900
Hi there, I'd love help identifying this mushroom I found growing amidst hemlock, beech, and sugar maple trees in upstate New York. They sort of looked like puffballs until I got closer and saw the pink gills. I've had no luck with googling anything of this description. Thank you! Indigo
Not a puffball that is for certain. They might be immature Agaricus species.
foxfire900
interesting. I'll go back and look today to see if they made it to maturity without being eaten.

Dave W
The woodland species of Agaricus that have caps with lots of small black scales are mostly toxic.
foxfire900
I looked today, but no sign of them.

foxfire900
I found these mushrooms a day or two later very close to where I found the ones in the original photo. Do you think they are the same kind in their mature state?
svs
Looks like it and again point toward Agaricus sp
michele
it could be Agaricus moelleri, toxic
Dave W
Yes, likely one of the toxic species of Agaricus. Often these types have a phenol/inky/chemical odor.
