Chestnut Mushrooms

Recommended Posts

Grew several grow bags of chestnut this spring and they did great for me.  Second flushes out of each bag, and third flushes out of most.

In the beginning of June, I inoculated 12 chestnut bags, using the previous bags as spawn.  They’ve been sitting on a table in my garage since then.  Noticed today that two were starting to fruit, so I cut the tops off those bags and sprayed them heavily with water.

The bucket method is easy. Get five gallon buckets and lids,  drill a couple drain holes in the bottom. Then use a quarter inch bit and drill holes all over the bucket, about four inches apart. Leave 2” at the top and bottom undrilled.

Soak straw (make sure it is fresh smelling before use) overnight, put something heavy on it to hold it down. I find a large wheelbarrow works well to soak it in.

The next day, drain the straw for 15-20 minutes to drain excess water.  Now, put a 2-3” layer of straw in the bottom of the bucket and compress it.  Sprinkle grain or sawdust spawn in a layer over it.  Repeat layers is straw and spawn until the bucket is full, ending with a layer of straw.  Put the lid on the bucket and wait.

It’s that simple. The bag method is more complicated.

I’ve used about six different vendors.  Guys in my mushroom club like Field and Forest out of Wisconsin but I buy most of my stuff from NorthSpore.  Just stick to a company that grows their own spawn.  Lots of variety in oysters.  I’d recommend a wide range species that will fruit in different weather.  My favorite is the Blue Oyster
