sherb
Me again. Black Trumpet find? High elevation, mixed hardwoods, fern understory, gradual slope bowl-like hollow. Thanks in advance.
John Smalldridge
Yep, that looks like a good ID, congrats.
sherb
It has not been that wet. Are these things that hardy? And, there were serveral mixed in with ferns. I mean the whole forest floor was covered with ferns. Should I return after some rain or a few damp days? Or go now and get what I can? Just trying to gauge of when these things really come out. Thanks again for all the help.
John Smalldridge
If it was me, I would do both. They are fairly hardy, but I would not take any that were falling in pieces, or dry looking. There should be some more popping a few days after your next good rain. One more thing that seems like good stewardship of the resource is to leave the ones of questionable quality to continue to propagate. Feral Boy
Was this fairly thick and very fragrant, or thin & leathery? The first would be Craterellus foetidus, the second C. cornucopoides -- both edible varieties.
