  1. Welcome Ron, you'll find everything fun-gi here !!
  2. That's really cool stuff there Matt ! I just love the elders and all their wisdom. Thanks for sharing
  3. FINALLY!!!!!! As always this one was found while driving to work yesterday afternoon minding my own business. Spotted it from about a mile away. It was about 10-15 foot in the tree where a branch had been cut. Funny thing is I went back after work at 3 am this morning to harvest it. Lol. I brought a ladder just in case but I put my climbing skills to the test. All I could think about while in the tree was what if a officer just so happened to be passing and see me climbing a tree on the side of the road at 3 in the morning!! ? Host was a 100-150 year old live oak tree. I really wanted to get a photo in situ but just wasn't happening. I'll post my cooking method in cooking forum. Sweet and sour sesame chicken of the woods !! Delicious!!
  4. Welcome Mike!! You've come to the right place. Many people here from your neck of the woods. Happy hunting! Daniel
  5. Heck, I'm just wishing I had a single specimen to toss in a pot and boil with onions, pennies, dimes, or even tractor tires !!!! ☹️ 1 month and still no rain !! On the subject of old wise cooking tales..... Get this... My grand mother used to put galvanized nails in her wild, yard bird gumbos, to tenderize the meat and get rid of wild flavor!!! Yes, that's correct, I said GALVANIZED nails!! May explain the reason I'm a little off the WALL ... Lol . That's one cultural cuisine I did not carry over into my generation. Not exactly sure where it derived from.
  6. Great to see you back Wade!!! Praying for a speedy recovery brother ? Enjoy those Herriciums !! Very different from your average mushrooms. Check out the crab cake recipe with Herriciums on this site. Sounds delicious!!
  7. I'm not sure Jason. A buddy bought it for me. I'd have to ask him. It was fully inoculated ready to fruit. All I had to do was soak 8 hrs then water a couple days. My buddy's kit grew mold so I chose water mine less. It called for water every day. Beings we're in South Louisiana, I figured the humidity here was a lot different than the manufacturers location. Yea I opted out the cold blast.... We'll see results in a few days. Thanks for replying. Daniel
  8. Will do. I wasn't sure if I should have soaked in ice water for second fruiting so I just soaked in room temperature water. I've read in the past from commercial cultivators that they soak inoculated logs in ice water to trick it into thinking winter was approaching.
  9. Kinda hard to believe we just had historic flooding here in South Louisiana about a month ago. It's been pretty dry since and nothing popping. So...... I settled for this growing kit from Home Depot. Actually pretty neet and recommend to anyone in interested in growing mushrooms. Photo 1 was seven days after soaking(this past Friday, second photo was Saturday morning, and third photo was Saturday night I figured I give this a try before going through with my elm oyster beds this fall. I'm also thinking of inoculating some stumps with grifola mycelium. Ought to be a interesting experiment.
  10. Thanks for all the input guys. Yes both specimens were Laetiporus sulphureus. I had them mixed up. The picture in the original post lacks the faint yellow coloration that was present in person. Due to lack of rain after fruiting, the sun dried it up pretty quick and stripped it's yellow color. Bobby.... I assure you I'll cook the best fish dish you've ever eaten given the chance. I also scuba dive/spearfish. Not that black drum is bad on the half shell,I literally go down below the rigs and choose my diner. Grouper is the best I ever by a long shot. Matt......Funny you say that about smelling them before you find them. I also thought it was in my head but you just confirmed my thoughts. Lol. When hiking with the girlfriend or just out about foraging, she says " geez how do you spot that? Are you sniffing them out ?!" Lol. Beautiful pictures! Thanks for sharing Heres the one found two years ago. Man I hate frisbee golf now Lol The second one is for you Bobby, yellow mouth grouper. Delicious!!
  11. Lol. That's what I told a buddy... I'll just stop looking for them!!! They were all stumbled upon. My girlfriend actually spotted the one from Monday driving down the road. When she started explaining to me what it looked like, I immediately did a 180(safely) lol
  12. Visited my best chanty patch for the first time in three weeks. I discovered that there was 2-3 foot of water there during the flooding. ? Majority of leaf litter was still there but not a single chanty. Maybe too soon after flooding?
  13. Out of the few thousand oak trees I've searched the past few years, I only managed to locate two Laetiporus cincinnatus/aka chicken of the woods. For a while I was beginning to doubt they even grew here in South Louisiana. Or, the oak trees here were just too healthy to promote fungus growth from Laetiporus cincinnatus. About two years ago the first one was found on a white oak. As the years went by searching white oaks and live oaks, I came up with a theory that the Laetiporus cincinnatus only grows on white oaks here because I only found one searching many miles and long hours . Well....... I've managed to prove my own theory wrong last week by finding one on a live oak. Only bad thing is that I was about a week too late ? Now, my theory is that they're just rare here for whatever reason. Lol. If any of you have been here in south Louisiana, you know that we have mature oaks by the millions. Lots of them 200+ years old. My guess is that the soil is so fertile here, the trees become very healthy at a early age and it's difficult for the Laetiporus cincinnatus to become parasitic. I would love to hear yalls thoughts on this. Maybe a question to ask would be what does it take for a Laetiporus cincinnatus to parasitize ?? P.S...... The first chicken I found has lost its home.... The parks maintenance crew whacked the tree down to put up a frisbee golf goal thingamajig. ???? This is the one I found Monday on a live oak. Better bet your marbles I'll be making frequent trips to this site in hope of another fruiting!!!
  14. Welcome Lefty, Great board, awesome people here with endless knowledge. Good to see someone here from the gulf states. Not many active members besides myself. Daniel.... South Louisiana
  15. Nope, that is a fact ? Most of my locations are under water. Very blessed to be high and dry. Unfortunately there are thousands displaced. No doubt in my mind we will prevail. So many people helping in many different ways. Just keep us in y'all thoughts and prayers. Thanks
  16. Hey Jason, thanks for taking over. Great web page and really look forward to many more years here. Awesome folks with great knowledge ??
  17. Ah ha .... That is a better proposal. Thanks Very interesting taste(Very small piece then spat out) I read somewhere that in India they dry acrid milkies and use them as a spice. Have you ever experimented with the acrid milkies?
  18. Lactarius piperatus ? Hard woods, mainly oak Clear, changing to cream color latex Gills slightly discoloring to brown when cut And VERY spicy flavor !!!!!
  19. Thanks for the reply Dave. I'll have to wait for some fresh fruitings to post better pictures. What really threw me off is it didn't have the sweet apricot smell or taste normally associated with chanterelus found in my area. I'll also get a spore print next fruiting. I didn't bother with first ones because they were really dry and didn't think they would drop any.
  20. Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca/False chanterelle??? Growing under white oaks in the yard They were pretty dry by the time I spotted them It was yellow just like a chanty but pictures probably lack some yellow color Inside white Smelled and taste like your normal mushroomy taste and smell (Very small piece and spat out) No where's near the taste and smell of a true chanty
  21. I apologize swamp .... Thought it was Oaks post Nice haul swamp ! !!lol
