  1. Lol trout !! Most of my finds last year were all while driving Thanks apocryphon!! John.... I made a oyster , potato and eggplant curry sauce. Mixed some tomatoes in there also. I didn't post it because I thought it was just ok. Kinda hard to mess up a curry sauce and I didn't think it was worth posting. Lol It really god though
  2. Nope It was a pretty young specimen didn't drop any spores.
  3. Heck yea man !! That'll make a great meal !! Keep us posted on second fruiting ??
  4. Thanks eat-bolete! She is a beauty No leaves on the tree Jason. I'm thinking it's a type of oak as well. We have so many different types here and haven't learned them all yet. No scare site that was obvious Tasso Dave posted on MO... here's the link if you guys would like to follow ..... http://mushroomobserver.org/267920
  5. Looking good eat-bolete!! I forgot to let ya know...... I did not get a second harvest off of mine.
  6. Thanks John !! My resources are very limited here in South Louisiana at this time. I'm in the process of trying to get acquainted with liked minded people who share the same interest in fungi. I just wish I had people close to home to share all this with. Sure, I love eating mushrooms, but as time goes on I'm becoming even more interested in much more. Hopefully soon I'll have my little shed/lab built to study these little guys, in hope to be able to contribute knowledge of mushrooms in south Louisiana to someone. Just seems there's not many people at all interested. I apologize..... I'm just ranting lol. Really curious as to what Dave finds out !!
  7. Ok .... I have not pin pointed the type of tree yet. It was a live tree. There were no leaves making it hard for me to identify. I wasn't sure how to preserve for study so I hadn't sliced it yet incase someone did want to study it. I'll contact a professor at a local college to see if he's interested before sending off. Dave, think I can dehydrate in oven ? Wil this do damage?
  8. Help ID please (Wicked cool mushroom) Not sure what kind of tree it was growing on. Maybe some kind of willow ? Tree was growing out of the water -----Mushroom specimen---- Light brown to dark brown cap. Spore surface does not touch stalk. Really smooth spore surface. Slight reticulation at base of stem. Slighty staining brown when contacted.
  9. Thanks John !! Good luck !! I sure will ...... I'm thinking a curry over white rice. Not sure yet. I'm really curious about a risotto. This is the first place I've heard of that. Read up a bit last night on it..... We'll see ??
  10. First oysters and chicken for the New Years!! Not quite as much as you Bradley but this is my biggest harvest of oysters yet. Spotted them on a dead oak tree on my way to work yesterday afternoon. Stopped on my way home this morning to pick a bit. Beetle free!! The chicken was actually harvested a couple of weeks ago, during the freeze we had here in South Louisiana. Preserved quite well on the tree until I found it.
  11. Dave, they came out really well. Just lacked a lot more flavor than I was hoping for. Sautéed in a little bit of olive oil, coconut oil, and butter with onions. I thought I was going to have to reconstitute in broth or something of that nature, but when thawed out they were moist. So, I just threw them in the skillet like that and cooked. Texture was still really great. Thanks again for all the tips over the summer ?? I'm back home in the south, with lots of rain in the forecast so hopefully I'll have some specimens to add by the weekend. Happ New Years everyone!! Wishing everyone full baskets in 2017!!
  12. Dave, we're visiting the Colorado Springs area. Went up to Mt Princeton a few days, everything was frozen, no fungi to be found.
  13. Thanks John, Merry Christmas to you and yours. This forum has really rocketed my love of fungi. Thanks
  14. Beautiful specimens Dave. Looking forward to the alphabetical list of fungi. Been kinda depressing not seeing many post here. Still pretty active in South Louisiana just haven't been out foraging much. Currently enjoying the beauty that the Rockies have to offer. Hopefully I'll come across a few specimens while hiking this week. Managed to harvest a few oysters back home before hitting the road. Not quite sure how I'll be preparing them yet. Also brought a pack of those oven dehydrated chantys I experimented with during the summer. Brought some fresh sea trout with me too so I'll probably be incorporating those two together. Ought to be a great feast tomorrow!! Merry Christmas to all from Colorado Springs!!
  15. Welcome Dan As Trout said..... You're in the right place. Very friendly and knowledgeable folks here
  16. Yes vitog, lots and lots of dying and dead oaks in my area. Many 100-200+ yrs old. I guess I was just dreaming of finding Pacific North West fruitings. Lol. I'm thinking they're not as allusive here as I was assuming.Timing is key. And of course being at the right location at the right time. Not just with Laetiporus but with mushrooms in general. Appreciate the input.
  17. L. Sulphureus still popping up in South Louisiana!! This is actually the second fruiting this year for this particular one. Same tree as picture in original post. Gonna let it mature a bit before harvesting.
  18. Lol !! That is freaking awesome!! Beautiful specimen!! We call that Cajun Ingenuity here in South Louisiana!! ??
  19. Oh wow!!!! I definitely will be looking into that. Come to think of it, after eating the gumbo mentioned in previous post for lunch a hour ago, I was able to taste the honeys fairly well. I guess I was expecting a strong unique taste from get go. I'm sure that the specimens being past prime and me boiling them for 20 minutes took lots of flavor away.
  20. Thanks again. I'll have to experiment a little with them now that I feel comfortable IDing them. Love the fact that they hold a great texture... even after par boiling these for twenty minutes. Just added the remainder to a okra gumbo I had in the fridge. Very delicious.
  21. Thanks Dave, I actually snipped the stalks off and only boiled a couple of hand fulls for about 20 minutes. Then grilled with onions and a little garlic to put on some burgers. Didn't have much taste, even before putting on burger. I think I may have boiled too long. I've seen post where it said boil for 20 minutes and then I've read articles where they don't even boil them. I guess I was just taking extra precautions beings it was the first of honeys I've ever harvested and planned on eating. I'm guessing, depending on how I plan on actually cooking them varies when it comes to par boiling?
  22. Armillaria tabescens aka Ringless Honeys ? Found on a lawn, I'm guessing they were growing out of buried roots or a old tree underground. There were 4 other clusters growing within a few feet. Spore printing now. Spores shown on top on one of the mushrooms in this post so not sure my specimen will drop anymore. Par boiling as we speak.... Do y'all think they are past their prime or there's still some culinary purpose left ?
  23. Welcome Bob, this site is extremely helpful and filled with very kind folks.
  24. Welcome Ron, you'll find everything fun-gi here !!
