I've also noticed variations of flavor within the same species. A couple points to consider is the maturity of the specimens at the time of collection and moisture content.

I agree with ladyflyfsh's thoughts. Certainly a species within the Ganoderma lucidum complex.

Thanks! I'm on the Treasure Coast. I've enjoyed the summer rainy season so far, more mild than I had hoped. I'm also noticing more fungal activity as of late, I recently found a nice chanterelle patch underneath live oak, which was exciting because so far this summer I haven't seen many in decent condition for the table.
