  1. Welcome, Niish. Looks like our state's representation is looking up around here.
  2. Welcome, Rollo. Minus the foreign foraging background we're in the same boat, and the same state, to boot. Good to see another local here... do keep us updated on what you find in the area!
  3. Thanks again, vitlog... guess I should head back outside and collect the young caps I just now (literally) left to mature. A lot to learn, I have... and thanks once more for your help.
  4. No kidding... Thank you both, jmw and vitlog. Will be taking a spore print tonight to really cement the gap between Rhacodes and Molybdite, then maybe we'll see if I can't avoid joining the ranks of the "unlucky" allergics. o__O Quick follow-up if it's not too much trouble -- probably more of an opinion question: should I wait until the closed caps mature and open to harvest or just take them as they are?
  5. Formal education has me absorbed as of lately but in my backyard "wanderings" I stumbles across this guy and so here I am shirking my studies, pondering at what this might be instead. "Furry" cream-brown cap is 8cm in diameter, gills are (it seems) unattached, the veil ring is thick, jagged, and can be moved up and down stem (PLEASE NOTE: in the pictures below I have managed to tear this ring and in the latter pictures it is removed altogether!). Stem was mostly hollow and flesh quickly stains a dark red upon being cut. Found in the vicinity of big-leaf maples and firs, my less-than-complete knowledge and complete lack of experience paired with my field guide brought me to a couple types of Lepiota (does Procera grow in the Pacific Northwest, or the US at all?) but more informed opinions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance...
  6. Thanks for the warm welcome and never mind, by the way, the fanciful username... Kris is a lot less work to type anyways. Good to see I've a few neighbors here. As for our collective disposition, I'm sure to find myself right at home there, as well.
  7. Found near a footpath, growing alone in the vicinity of douglas firs but across the trail from another patch of similar mushrooms growing out from under (but, it didn't seem, from) a downed log, crammed together but not connected. Would the latter spoil the prospect all-together? Having done my homework on this one I am *fairly* sure of myself, BUT this being my first find a bit of validation would be greatly appreciated, especially faced with countless threats of Jack O' Lantern look-alikes. Thanks in advance. EDIT: Clearly I didn't "do my homework" on the spelling of "Chanterelle". o__O
  8. Greetings from the (seemingly under-represented?) Pacific Northwest, Found my way here after following a trail of green wild edibles right to the front door of my childhood culinary nemesis -- turns out not all mushrooms feel like rubber and taste like feet -- and so here I am, looking forward to meeting you all, exchanging notes, and hoping to learn a thing or two about my enemy-turned-friend the EASY way... Cheers!
