  1. I ate several of them this year and thought they were pretty good!
  2. I found this in my yard yesterday morning. There are several old oak stumps near them and I am guessing they are growing off of the buried roots. From far away they look like Chicken of the Woods, but they are definitely not!
  3. Nice! They have really been popping up here in Virginia over the past few weeks.
  4. I woke up this morning to find this in one of my flower beds. I believe it is Meripilus sumstinei, (Black-staining Polypore). I bruised it this morning and when I came back this evening it was black where I touched it.
  5. The past couple of weeks Chicken of the Woods have really been popping up. I have been finding mostly Laetiporus sulphureus, but this morning I found a nice Laetiporus cincinnatus.
  6. I found what I believe to be Ganoderma lucidum. These are growing on an old oak log in the woods behind my house. The woods are mostly oak. The bodies of the mushrooms range in size from 2-5" across. The pore surface is white. I found ones similar to these a few weeks ago in another area that were identical except for being 10-12" across. I have not done a spore print yet.
  7. I harvested my first Chicken of the Woods yesterday here in Virginia. We have had a ton of rain this year.
  8. Gorgeous 'shrooms!I just got back from a run up in the mountains and saw a few Chants along the trail. I think I may have to go back and get some tomorrow. We have had a lot of rain recently so they are all popping up. I took home a good haul of oysters yesterday.
  9. I also have the Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America and love it. It does help a lot. I prefer the Mushrooms of West Virginia and Central Appalachians due to it being more in-depth. I have been using the two combined to help ID. I also have the Audubon Field Guide, but I am not impressed with it. I carry it out in the field, but always come back and cross reference with my other books.
  10. I need to check that book out. I have Mushrooms of West Virginia and the Central Appalachians by William Roody and love it. I am just starting to get serious about mushrooms and it seems that I cant read enough about them.
