  1. Found some Jack-o-Laterns this weekend on an old stump. The tops were not glowing, but when i knocked it over, and the gills had a definate glow... one of the most facinating fungi i have observed. Would post pictures but my camera wouldnt capture the faint glow. Side note on Jack-o-lanterns; they almost always grow on rotted wood or roots, Chantrelles never do.
  2. Does anyone know the fruiting specs on "hen of the woods"? (i.e.: ground temp, air temp, moister, humidity, etc.). The reason I ask is I am finding them around Saint Louis, MO. right now, and want to take a trip to my property a couple hours South of Saint Louis (Jadwin, MO). However I don't want my foray to be a bust if the conditions are not ideal in that area yet. Any thoughts?
  3. I Harvest oysters all the time, and have never been able to smell Anise or licorice odor. To me they smell like the ocean, sort of fishy smell.
  4. Found about a pound of oysters this weekend, and some others yellowish mushrooms im not sure of, But both were everywhere in the St Louis area. I think these may be honey mushrooms, not sure, but they were everywhere! Not really sure what this is
  5. found several oysters this weekend my self, they seem to be everywhere right now.
  6. Adding to your comment, Dave. I Harvested a turkey this spring and when i was cleaning him i found a few morels in his gizzard and stomach. Just wish i knew where he found them.
  7. Yes, the glare is a little misleading. I need to get a new camera. Thanks for thi input.
  8. Dave W, What you think it is? I have never found any Chantrelles on my farm before (but i never looked until recently). I've sent the pictures to some others and they tell me that it could be Cantharellus cibarius or some other type of chantrelle. In Missouri the more common chantrelle is the smooth chantrelle( cantharellus lateritius). It is deffinatly not that as it has clear pseduogills, as the smooth is just that, smooth, with little or no pseduogills (I like that word by the way). I did cut this open and did not see a difference in the structures. the cap was also attached to the stem and would not come off unlessed ripped.
  9. Its funny how some things in life just happen, out of no where. Case and point, i was on my way home from work yesterday when i decieded to take a back route to scout out some potential mushroom hunting areas. I came to a stop sign looked over in the yard and saw a huge chicken of the woods mushroom popping out of the ground. I quickly pulled over and went to examine the specimin. It was growing off the root of a near by dead oak tree. I walked up to the house and asked the owner if i could have them, the owner told me that he usually runs them over with a lawn mower, so he was more than happy to get rid of them. I also asked if he used any fertilizers or pesticides on his lawn, he said no. These were young and fresh, as i was cutting the stems water was running out. I collected nearly 20 pounds.....Man what a find...... and my first for chickens ever! cant wait to find more. That is my size 12 shoe in the top corner I believe these to be Laetiporus Cincinnatus, because of the white underside.
  10. I was at my farm near Salem, MO (heart of the ozarks), last week when Issac brought about 3 inches of rain. MUSHROOMS EVERY WHERE! Most of them were not the edible type, but facinating none the less. I did manage to find a few golden chantrelles, and giant puff balls. All in all it was a great weekend. cant wait to see what this weekend has to offer. still waiting to find my first hen.
