  1. I came across these this morning in a mixed deciduous/coniferous forest in central North Carolina. They are in clusters of 4 or 5; don't seem to share a base unless it's underground. They're emerging horizontally from a mossy area at the base of a tree in a mostly shaded area. (horizontally because there's a sharp incline between the base of the tree and the level of the path I was on). No particular smell I could detect. Perhaps 2-3 inches long. Any ideas? I've never encountered something that looks like this before.
