  1. That's awesome!! You know when the morels will be up here in PA. Hope this weather doesn't ruin the season. You will have to meet up with Dave and I again.
  2. Hygrocybe have a hollow, fibrous stalk and chants are solid.
  3. The link that Tasso posted had a lot of great info. It seems the potency increases after the tree is dormant. It also increases the tree's chance of surviving longer for future fruitings.
  4. Thanks, guys. I guess I need to wait a month or so to harvest according to the article.
  5. I was sitting in my tree stand behind my house when I noticed some Chaga growing about ten feet away. This is a first for me. I never expected to find it right behind my house. And it looks like there may be more next year. The bark has some cracks with trace amounts. It's only about eight feet off the ground. Any tricks to harvesting?
  6. I just picked my first in my neighbor's yard the other day. It was barely the size of my hand, but the tips were drying out so I picked it. Nowhere near as nice as yours.
  7. My best find was a 25 lb hen. It was about 30 inches across. I have a picture somewhere. There were other large hens right around it, probably 8-10 lb each. The mushroom I still have not found is lobsters.
  8. I took a ride around to a few spots yesterday with no luck. We haven't had much rain in SC PA lately, but we are supposed to get plenty over the next few days. That wityh the cooler temps should get some hens growing.
  9. I hope not. I breathed in quite a few, enough to make me cough. I haven't had any negative effects so far.
  10. This is a first for me too. It looked like smoke coming off of them. The smell was almost almost overwhelming. I actually choked on the spores when I got close enough for the picture, which I took with my phone.
  11. My neighbor and I were scouting the woods for the upcoming archery season and found a giant flush of jack o'lantern mushrooms. They were dispersing spores like crazy. I was able to get a decent close up. The light was hitting them just right.
  12. Looks like a cauliflower mushroom. I haven't found them in years. They are very good.
  13. After not many good days of mushroom hunting, yesterday I finally found some good flushes. A good variety of boletes, big flushes of oysters, some milkies and even a few chants at two new spots. I don't know my boletes, but these look good to me. I wasn't sure about all of the boletes, so only kept the ones I know are safe. I even managed a beefsteak.
  14. I lost my spot for chants when I lost my job last year. In a good year it would produce ten lbs or so. Yesterday I finally found two new places, although the chants were few and somewhat dry. We at expecting rain the ne t few days, but it may be too late for a good flush now. Lots of boletes and oysters, though, and a few milkies.
  15. We've had the same problem with rainfall here. Small strong storms here and there, but none at the house. Finally a nice soaking rain today with high temps this week. I did manage some suillus pictus and a variety of boletes. Also found a handful of trumpets and some other small, interesting mushrooms. Sorry for the sideways pictures.
  16. You may have better luck if you post this to the identifying mushrooms section.
  17. I've always thought they are beautiful snakes. But I haven't come across many.
  18. Another down year. We haven't had a really good season in a few years and now the orchard I hunt changed their spray program so the yellows there are no longer safe. The best morels we found were this past Saturday. One of them was a monster, but they were at a nature center, so we coudn't harvest them.
  19. It looks like this year may come around after all. I just found this growing 20 feet from my back porch. We've only found a few around our property, and this is the second one that wasn't too far gone. The only tree I think it can be coming from is a large cherry tree just downhill. There a large poplar about 20 feet farther down the hill.
  20. There are some amazing fungi there. Beautiful photos, Mary.
  21. Nice morels, Dave. We've had wet weather and below normal temps for a week and a half. Things are looking better then next few days, so maybe we will get some nice yellows thus week.
  22. Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving. Safe travels to any of you who will be on the road to visit family. What mushroom dishes is everyone making for today? I'm doing my usual, chestnut and wild mushroom stuffing. This year the mushrooms are trumpet and yellow foot chants.
  23. It also depends on how much you want to spend. I think I paid less than $50 for mine. But it only holds so much and takes a few days to refill and run if you have a large haul of mushrooms.
