  1. I'm already having the dreams. Last year wasn't that good for us. It was pretty dry and we were working on the new house a lot. This is the first mushroom we found in the woods at the new house.
  2. FB and I had a nice chat session the other night. I'm gonna try to be on again this Sun at 7 eastern time. I'm hoping a few more of you can make it. It's starting to look like spring already!!
  3. I'm still going to try to be in chat tomarrow. My best friend's grandmother passed away yesterday and his parents are flying in from CA, so I might go visit with them. If I can't make the chat, hopefully there will be at least two people there.
  4. I used to work with a guy who grows shitakes. Last I talked to him he was experimenting with differnt types of hardwoods. He's been growing them for years and sells them to several local restaurants. If I can get in touch with him I'll try to get him to join our group.
  5. Let's try this again. I've been offline for a while, but I'm back now. I think that a chat would be a great idea to help get through the rest of the off season. I propose a Sunday evening chat, maybe 7 pm eastern time?
  6. It is a very interesting looking morel. Why is it that so many interesting things are so rare? I guess that's what makes them interesting. I haven't had time to read the article, yet.
  7. Welcome to all the new memebers who have joined in the last month or so that I've been offline.
  8. Welcome, Ray. It looks like you have a lot of the same mushrooms that find in southern PA.
  9. I have yet to try the chaga that Zora gave me. It got lost in the move and we found it a couple weeks ago. I will give it a try.
  10. We are looking to start a weekly chat in the forum to keep us going through the winter. I want to schedule it so that as many people can join in as possible. What times work best for everyone?
  11. It's pouring down rain here. If we get a few warm days next week, we might get a few more oysters before the end of the year.
  12. OK, I can understand the price for the two pound truffle, but what's he going to do with a truffle that only weighs 14 oz? I mean, that seems a bit small to do anything with, doesn't it? I bought fresh Perigord truffles for my one year anniversary along with a whole lobe of fois gras, magret duck breast, and some nice caviar. It was the best meal I've ever cooked at home. There's nothing like black squid ink ravioli stuffed with fois gras and fresh truffle in a lobster saffron foam. Unfortunately, the price of truffles has gone through the roof since the dollar has dropped compared to the euro.
  13. Don't sweat it. I found some inky caps growing next to the stump out front the other day. When I went over to check them out I found a nice, large cluster of oysters hidden on the other side.
  14. I checked when I picked them for taste and bruising. They didn't have much flavor raw and stained slightly brown after about a half hour. There is also no veil present. It sounds like a lot of work for the handful that I have, though.
  15. They must be suillus. They were damp when I found them and the caps were slimy. There are about ten more coming up, so there will be enough for a meal. We picked up some fingerling potatoes and cipollini onions at the farmer's market that will go great with them.
  16. I'm not very schooled on boletes, so I'm not sure what these are. They were growing under pines at the edge of my woods. They are about two inches across with no depression around the stalk. there are more coming up in clusters.
  17. Mary, I'm guessing it's about three hours from Kennett Square. The mushrooms aren't so great here this year, though. I've only seen one hen that someone beat me to and not much else. You are still welcome to come down, though.
  18. LadyFF- I'm in south central PA right near Gettysburg. Other than this weekend I am free. If you want to come down, I can make room for you. I won't know how the shrooms are until this Friday. The middle of Oct is when the hens really start in these parts, normally. I'm hoping the rain we've had in the past weeks will be enough to get them started. There have been some amanitas, puffballs, and a few others lately, but who knows what the next few weeks will bring.
  19. Zora, I'm pretty sure that's a black staining polypore. I had tons of them growing on stumps in my woods this summer. I've never had a hen stain black like that before. Hopefully I'll get to check a fe spots on Friday. It's my only free day since my family's coming to visit this weekend.
  20. Very cool. If everyone agrees with this one, I'll be happy.
