  1. Perfect specimen. I find the above combtooth but have never found the lion's mane. The combtooth crisped up so fast when sauteeing I just put it in a fresh salad. Worked really well.
  2. I find some that have a strong anise smell and some that have a seafood market smell (and they were fresh not old). I thought the latter were the better ones.
  3. Nice! Makes me wish we would get some rain. Been a dry summer here.
  4. I started keeping one this year. I use a notebook so it is basically a mushroom journal. I finally did it after a couple of years of looking back thru my old phone pics to see what date I found those mushrooms on last year or the year before.
  5. Looks like maybe Calvatia craniiformis skull-shaped puffball. I haven't found those around here so not positive. I've just never seen the ridges on regular giant puffballs or any puffballs before.
  6. I might be way off but check the pholiota genus. Some species there seem to be close.
  7. Oh I didn't notice the ignicolor. I haven't seen those here but did find some last week in the Smoky Mountains (30 or so in a patch) but had to leave them as they were beside the trail. Also saw virescens, all of the above 3 lactarius, and amanita jacksonii but I didn't end up getting off the trail and looking further.
  8. Nice haul. Great assortment. What do you have, 8 varieties? Maybe more.
  9. Dang Dave! You had me all intrigued until that photo. Hahaha. If my wife found that lying around the kitchen she would be wondering how the dog got up on the counter and why he didn't go outside. I'm just kidding, but you gotta admit.....
  10. I'm going to be in Gatlinburg for 4 or 5 days around July 7-10th. Also taking a day trip to Asheville. I've read the regulations on picking mushrooms in GSM national park. Does anybody here have any tips they can share as far as what all edible species I should expect to find, general areas in or outside the park, elevations I should stick to? I do not want your proven honey holes or anything, just some general tips. Like can I expect to find chanterelles in Cades Cove or would there be too much activity there? Stuff like that. Also, I have no itinerary, so I could drive a couple hours any day I'm there to hunt other parks in western North Carolina, etc. Thanks for any help you guys can give, Lee
  11. I'm guessing maple from the pics. Matt, I've been on a terrible oyster run. The last 8 or 9 fruitings I have found I have been a day to 3 days late. Haven't had a meal of them since last August. I almost bought an oyster brick at the flea market yesterday.
  12. Nice. I wish I could find some black trumpets. Been on the top of my list for a couple of years now.
  13. Oysters and they look prime. I found some yesterday but they were so infested with insects I had to leave them.
  14. Could be Dave. I considered that when I returned to get it but everything looked like it was in perfect condition when I originally found it (except for the gills obviously!) If I ever happen to come across another one would you like to have it? I'd ship it to you for free.
