  1. Met some polish people in the woods looking for zelenki (Tricholoma equestre), they asked me if I saw any purplish gray Tricholomas as well. Today I found some, please chime in if you know anything about these or have an idea which Tricholoma this is. Taste is very slightly bitter, quite a robust mushroom, grows under pines.
  2. Wow the woods are ridiculously empty, what is going on, where are the mushrooms?!
  3. probably Suillus salmonicolor.
  4. The only thing I know for sure that will be out there in a pine forest in a few days is red-capped Leccinums. Soil under needle duff retains moisture very well. Chicken and beefsteaks should make more appearances as well. Weather is still very warm here...who knows, maybe hens will come back.
  5. Haven't seen A. tabescens in my area at all. In mid September we had a flush of A. gallica, which passed in about 3 days, and then a few weeks later a few stumps produced A. mellea. Quiet ever since, ground is wet, no shrooms. Waiting patiently.
  6. we got about half an inch, hopefully it's enough. As of now, all barren.
  7. Nice find. Chicken is sure out there, found some today myself, just have no idea what to do with it, none of my friends or relatives like it, wish i could sell it to some Whole Foods or something.
  8. sounds about right, vitog, thanks, that makes sense, I think I just expected too much.
  9. yeah, both sources proved to be not reliable. Had some rain on saturday, I checked the sources it said 0"-0.06" in every town I searched for. drove to the parks, one is bone dry as expected, two others in different towns are drenched, ground is moist at least a few inches in, huge puddles everywhere, looks like at least 0.5" fell there. Happy we got some rain though.
  10. Looks great Dave! Glad something survives this desert weather.
  11. i hear ya Matt, today's forecast is 0.1" here, and I'm praying that at least that much will fall, as it's been super dry and the forecast for the next 10 days seems to sunny. I guess it's time to take my fishing rod out in the meantime.
  12. Matt, length of stems I leave is determined by either worm holes (so i have to trim until mushroom is clear of that), or the toughness. As they mature, stem becomes very stringy and tough, so I trim it until my knife cuts it very easily. I followed Dave's guidelines and more, just to be safe. I parboiled for 5 min first time, it foamed so much, i drained the water, rinsed the shrooms, filled with water again, boiled for 15 min, with much less foaming this time, drained again, then cooked by either sauteeing or pickling.
  13. Thanks Matt. I'm monitoring honeys very closely this year as I'm determined to collect enough this year. My wife tried them last year and has been asking me for honeys ever since. Found a few more spots today, lost about 50% to worms. Pics showing a bowl of shrooms before and after sorting. Last batch was par-boiled, sauteed and frozen, today's finds I'm pickling.
  14. To be honest I'm a little upset that they are popping now because I'm losing about 70% to worms. However, I found very few spots that are fruiting right now, so I'm hopeful that A. mellea is NOT out in full force yet.
  15. wow, that's a monster winecap! this year has been pretty darn good, but last year Sept/beginning of October had more rain, I'm already seeing the difference in certain shroom fruiting.
  16. Camille, Thanks I'll check them out, haven't tried. Dried some though to see how well it reconstitutes. Either I found someone else's spot or someone else found mine. Whatever I left behind was later picked by someone. I got the first pick though ;))
  17. I tried them in every possible condition, don't like it, so I leave them be, just take photos.
