  1. Last week
  2. Found a bunch today in Southern Indiana.
  3. We just happened to have a couple of strip steaks in the fridge as well, so I'm pretty excited for dinner tonight. This will be my first taste of morel. My wife doesn't like mushrooms but she's excited to give it a try anyway to see what all the fuss is about!
  4. On March 31 four morels showed up on my property here in NE PA. I think these are the result of a morel grow kit I planted here ~20 years ago. These started showing up in 2020 in the spot where I planted the material from the kit. I had specimens sequenced (twice, one sample by FunDiS and another sample by Steve Russell). These are not a species typically found around here. I have a local forested spot where I usually find a few Morchella angusticeps (the native Black Morel). We have found only one so far this year. I *think* the warm days during early March brought this species to the cusp of fruiting, and then a return to cold weather shut them down. This coming week the weather is forecast to be sunny with highs in the 70Fs. Coming off of all the wet weather we've been having, I think this will set us up for the M. diminutiva and M. americana by next weekend. The photos show the morels on my property. DNA and microscopic traits suggest they are M. norvegiensis, a relatively newly described species. This is a species of Black Morel. The fruit bodies seem to take a long time to mature. The phots show: specimen A on 3/31, specimen A on 4/13, specimen B on 3/31, specimen B on 4/13, and another of these that I harvested because it got knocked over, probably by a deer. The view shows the "sinus" (ie, recessed region between the overhanging cap and the apex of the stipe). This is a trait associated with Morchella sect. Distantes, ie. the Black Morels.
  5. I think you would need DNA to determine the ID to species. There are more than the two species I mentioned found in NA. Here's a link to a paper published in 2013 chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://mathenylab.utk.edu/Site/Publications_files/Looney_et_al_2013.pdf . This paper makes no mention of A. angiosprermarum. Instead, it discusses the "hardwood version of A. americana." As seen here in the Wiki link, this is A. angiospermarum https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auricularia_angiospermarum .
  6. A friend in our club got about 15 in Huntington County the other day. The eastern pa club found about 14 last week, but they were all immature. I haven’t had the chance to get out yet.
  7. Thanks for the help. Adam Haritan says Auricularia Judae was split into 7 new species all of which are considered edible and some might have anti tumor and vaso-dilator properties. I was more worried about some of them being inedible so that makes it easier at least. I think I am gonna keep digging on new info on these. The world of Phenotypes is really heating up. Stamets said some interesting things on the recent Joe Rogan episode. Got me excited to try and find some novel phenotypes with higher levels of medicine or even possibly different compounds if I understood him right. I wish I had a device to help me differentiate between them though. Probably gonna have to send everything to a lab and wait.
  8. I guess someone finding some early in Conestoga on March 21st threw me off. I just talked to a guy that said it's just kicking off as well. Thanks for the info. I am excited now!
  9. I’m in the poconos.. it hasn't started yet here. You’re only a couple hours south. Things are just getting going where you are. Will likely get going after the warm temps the next week along with the rain. April 24th is the earliest I have ever found a morel
  10. No idea about the specific medical application mentioned. The species of Auricularia pictured is likely different than any of those found in China. I don't know the names of the Chinese species. Years back, all Auricularia species were lumped into one species concept, A. auricula. DNA-based studies conducted during the previous 10-20 years have revealed a few North American species, the two most common of which are A. americana (on conifer wood) and A. angiospermarum (on hardwood). I have found (I *think*) the latter on grape vine branches https://mushroomobserver.org/318673?q=1psME , as well as on hardwood branches https://mushroomobserver.org/451866?q=1p9YK . The branch seen in the photos posted here look like hardwood. So, my guess is A. angiospermarum.
  11. Earlier
  12. Anyone still finding Morels around or in Pennsylvania. I know they found some in Conestoga on the 21st of March so figure I might of missed this years season already.
  13. So I learned Auricularia is used to treat hemorrhoids in ancient Chinese medicine. I am wondering if the American species have the same compounds as the ones they use overseas and which species this is. It seemed relatively fresh and soft. I know they darken with age And usually only find old black crusty ones.

  16. Hello. I'm Mark. I have a general interest in identifying and eating mushrooms that I come across and equally, an interest in their effects on brain and body. I'm a former bio research assistant who became a psychologist 43 years ago and a certified psychedelic harm reduction therapist this year. I won't promote, prescribe, recommend or go off topic here. Thanks for your expertise. Mark Mellinger PhD
  17. I'm here for much the same reason as Nezahualcoyotl. A general interest in identifying and eating mushrooms I come across and equally, an interest in their effects on brain and body. I appreciate everyone's concern lest this resource be swallowed up by the enormous psychedelic Renaissance. No one likes seeing a quiet woodland meadow turn into a McDonald's. That said, I'm a former bio research assistant who became a psychologist 43 years ago and a certified psychedelic harm reduction therapist this year. I won't promote, prescribe, recommend or go off topic here. Mark Mellinger PhD
  18. And this is what some of them look like now. Ready to harvest.

  21. If your oyster bags have fruited for the last time, don’t throw them away! Use them to build new bags or buckets. I recently gave a talk and had them walk through actually building oyster bags. I wasn’t sure how many were attending and I only had one bag of oyster spawn, good to build about 14 bags. So I emptied it into a clean plastic tub, and mixed in the contents of two of my oyster bags that had finished fruiting. Then i filled 35 zip lock bags each with a cup and a half of this mix. I came back with 23 bags of spawn mix left, so i built 23 oyster bags. Have given four bags away. My remaining 19 bags are pinning and it looks like no I’ll have to plan some mushroom dishes for Easter.
  22. I think this is Pleurotus, ie. Oyster Mushrooms. Any notable aroma? What type of tree? The small one on top looks like it may be past prime, maybe beginning to decompose.
  23. Found this along the Boise River in the Treasure Valley. It has gills underneath, so it can't be Chicken of the Woods? Thank you!
  24. The tree looks like a birch, similar appearance to the "yellow birch" (Betula alleghaniensis) where I find Chaga here in Pennsylvania, USA. If it's Chaga (Inonotus obliquus canker) then the inside of it will be golden-yellow or bright yellow-orange with white veins running through.
  25. hello fellow fungi people i wonder if this is chaga or some other species would love your expert advice please
  26. Looks like a species in the Coprinellus micaceus group. It is believed there are two species that most commonly represent this group, C. micaceus and C. truncorum, although it may turn out these two names refer to the same species. The mushrooms in this group begin life with tiny glistening flakes on the caps ("mica" flakes). Rain or other erosion may wash most of all of the flakes off the caps. During humid conditions these mushrooms deliquesce, meaning they dissolve into a black inky substance. But, it the weather is dry, they may just dry out in-situ. "Mica Caps" generally fruit in clustered groups on or near wood (ie. roots, trees, stumps). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coprinellus_micaceus Genera Coprinellus and Coprinopsis include some similar-looking species. For the latter, some cause illness if consumed prior, during, or after alcohol is also consumed.
  27. I live in LA , And found these under my lemon tree in the backyard. Can anyone help?
